Audio Producer and Restoration Engineer Ward Marston.This CD, the third in our survey of tenor Richard Tauber’s recordings, makes the transition from his early acoustic recordings to the middle period electrical recordings, this time with a programme of operetta. These recordings were made between 1921 and 1934, during which period the young Tauber’s voice was at its most flexible and rich. Of course, Tauber’s name is synonymous with this repertoire, and never does he sound more at home than in the `Tauberlieder´ – arias from the operettas written especially for him by Franz Lehar. `It is hard not to capitulate to such seductive singing … His singing in itself, so effortless and light, so filled with sweet, warm tone and tender mezza voce, is deeply appealing and quite individual in its accents. Who could play with an individual phrase so arrestingly as Tauber? Few if any tenors who have recorded lieder have had such a voice or such powers of communication.´ Gramophone.
