GREAT CONDUCTORS - Willem MENGELBERG - conducts Beethoven and Schubert
Produktbeskrivelse
This disc brings together many of Willem Mengelberg’s recordings of shorter pieces by Beethoven and Schubert. These include several recordings of considerable rarity, such as the Turkish March from the incidental music to ‘The Ruins of Athens’, recorded in Amsterdam at the height of the Second World War. The representation of music by Beethoven is extensive, and includes the first and third versions of the ‘Leonora’ overture, intended for his opera ‘Fidelio’, two of his finest overtures composed for the stage, ‘Coriolan’ and ‘Egmont’, as well as other items of incidental music and the slow movement from the Eighth Symphony. The two items by Schubert are among his most popular compositions the overture known as ‘Rosamunde’ and the ‘Marche Militaire’, a favourite of duetting pianists across the world.
