What separated Django Reinhardt from other guitarists of the 1930s was his unique style, forced upon him by accident. Every note rang true. His tone was remarkably clear and he voiced each phrase with passion. His runs up the neck of the guitar were taken at breakneck speeds, leaving even the most respected guitarist shaking his head in disbelief. Django was important not because he was a great guitarist, but because he was unique. His original compositions and his versions of the classic jazz numbers written by the European and American musicians of the thirties and forties caught the spirit of the period. They continue to be extraordinarily popular. The repertoire on this fourth volume in the Naxos Jazz Legends survey of Django’s recordings concentrates on repertoire recorded during 1937. The programme contains many tracks made with the Famous ‘Quintette of the Hot Club of France’, such as ‘Runnin’ Wild’ and ‘The Sheik of Araby’. Also included are several fine recordings made just with the violinist Stephane Grappelli, such as ‘Fiddle’s Blues’ and ‘I’ve found a new baby’, and two excellent recordings of arrangements of the music of Bach, which anticipate Jacques Loussier’s popular ‘Play Bach’ recordings of the 1960s.
