AL JOLSON - Complete Recordings, Vol. 2
Produktbeskrivelse
The selection of songs performed by Al Jolson on this new Naxos Nostalgia CD is taken from the recordings which he made for Columbia Records. Jolson recorded for Columbia between 1913 and 1923, and the present selection concentrates on the titles made between 1916 and 1918. These rarely heard recordings are remarkable technically for their immediacy and clarity, despite the supposed limitations of the early acoustic recording process. Jolson’ssinging voice is rich and clear and his diction possesses a quite extraordinary clarity. The orchestral backings take us back directly to the world of American vaudeville with a startling immediacy. The choice of songs includes several identified by experts in the field as among the finest in Jolson’s repertoire, such as the title track ‘Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody’, ‘Where Did Robinson Crusoe Do With Friday On Saturday Night’, and ‘I’m All Bound Round With the Mason Dixon Line’.
